German Love Parade festival stampede kills 18
timesofearth.com Berlin — At least 18 people have been killed after a stampede at Germany's "Love Parade" techno music festival, according to police. The festival is being held at a former freight rail station in Duisburg, near Dusseldorf. German news media reported that the stampede began after police tried to stop thousands of people from entering the station. "It seems to be something like a mass panic at the entrance," Stefan Wlach, a German journalist at the festival, told AFP news agency. The event attracts music fans from all over the world, with floats from Brazil, Russia, the Netherlands, Spain and Australia among other nations. "Officials want to end the festival, but they don't dare... because they say the mass panic will increase." Ambulances rushed to pick up victims, though rescue workers were reportedly having trouble reaching some of the wounded. "Initial information shows 10 people were killed in a mass panic by an entrance tunnel, 10 had to be resuscitated and 15 more were injured," said Ralf Klauck, the Duisburg police chief. The festival was once held in Berlin, but has been held in western Germany since 2007. Roughly 1.4 million people are attending this year. The original Berlin Love Parade grew from a 1989 peace demonstration into a huge outdoor celebration of club culture that drew about 1.5 million people at its peak in 1999. Many other countries stage their own versions of the festival. Sydney, San Francisco, Leeds, Caracas and Santiago have all ...

Today's Top Iran Stories (May 26, 2009) - Israel suspects Venezuela, Bolivia of giving Iran uranium report According to an Israeli Foreign Ministry document obtained by news agencies yesterday, Venezuela and Bolivia are suspected of supplying Iran with uranium for its nuclear program. The report, based on intelligence by military and diplomatic sources, both Israeli and foreign, also claims that the Islamic Republic is setting up Hezbollah cells in northern Venezuela and on Venezuelas Margarita Island. The three-page document further states that Caracas is helping Tehran to evade United Nations Security Council sanctions against Iran, in part to undermine Washington. Iran rejects Western accusations that it is seeking a nuclear weapon, saying its atomic work has solely peaceful purposes. Venezuela Bans Coke Zero
Venezuela Bans Coke Zero
Yes to fast food by no to Coke. *The Venezuelan government of US-critic President Hugo Chavez ordered Coca-Cola to withdraw its Coke Zero beverage from the South American nation, citing unspecified dangers to health. Health Minister Jesus Mantilla said the zero-calorie Coke Zero should no longer be sold and stocks of the drink removed from store shelves while the government investigated its ingredients. "The product should be withdrawn from circulation to preserve the health of Venezuelans," the minister said in comments reported by the government's news agency. "Coca Cola Zero is made under the highest quality standards around the world and meets the sanitary requirements demanded by the laws of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela," the company said in a joint statement with its local bottling company. Mantilla did not say what health risks Coke Zero, which contains artificial sweeteners, posed to the population. Coke Zero was launched in Venezuela in April and Coca-Cola Femsa, the Mexico-based company that bottles Coke products locally, said at the time it aimed to increase its market share for low calorie drinks by 200 percent.

SPEAKING FREELY
Speaking Freely- John Perkins For many years John Perkins was an "economic hit man" in the world of international finance; a function he performed by persuading Third World countries to take on large -scale public works projects. Today, we recognize that these types of projects, financed by the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), have served to enrich US corporations while creating crippling debt for these countries, effectively turning them into American client states. Experiencing a change of heart, Perkins resigned from the business in 1981. After running a utility company, he founded the nonprofit organization, Dream Change Coalition, which works closely with Amazonian and other indigenous people to help preserve their environments and cultures. Take the time for a conversation with Perkins about globalization and inequality around the world. Syria: coup engineers used the same sniper tactic to incite Venezuelans in 2002
It's unfortunate to see so many decent people duped into legitimizing disinformation and front organizations that exist solely to destabilize Syria and that benefit the 1% elite while destroying the lives of ordinary Syrians and Libyans. Out of all the writing on the wall, some of the most explicit is the fingerprint left by the cruel strategy being employed to overthrow sovereign regimes. We can thank the amateurs who were put in charge of overthrowing Venezuela's Hugo Chavez. They are the 'G. Gordon Liddy' element within the contemporary black-ops community. When the coup engineers bungled the Caracas operation, they gave up the blueprint that should raise red flags for anyone thoughtfully analysing the situation in Syria (or the one in Libya). What was supposed to happen in Venezuela wasn't too complex: foreign funding of legitimate and peaceful dissident groups, pushing those movements towards street protests and then, the psychopathology comes out as clandestine snipers take up positions and begin shooting innocent civilians to death. The media is already prepared to broadcast news of a massacre and repeat the lie that it was the Chavez government that irrationally and maniacally ordered troops to fire on a protest march that was not a threat to state stability. Unfortunately for the evil-doers, the strength of the Bolivarian Revolution, the deep history of resistance to capitalism's obscenely violent tactics in Latin America and Rodney King style camera work ...

The War on Democracy
The War on Democracy
Award winning journalist John Pilger examines the role of Washington in America's manipulation of Latin American politics during the last 50 years leading up to the struggle by ordinary people to free themselves from poverty and racism. Since the mid 19th Century Latin America has been the 'backyard' of the US, a collection of mostly vassal states whose compliant and often brutal regimes have reinforced the 'invisibility' of their majority peoples. The film reveals similar CIA policies to be continuing in Iraq, Iran and Lebanon. The rise of Venezuela's Hugo Chavez despite ongoing Washington backed efforts to unseat him in spite of his overwhelming mass popularity, is democratic in a way that we have forgotten or abandoned in the west. True Democracy being a solid 80% voter turnout in support of Chavez in over 6 elections.

South America, School of the Americas, US Special Forces, Venezuela, and Panama (1972)
thefilmarchive.org The Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHISC or WHINSEC), formerly the United States Army School of the Americas (USARSA or SOA; Spanish: Escuela de las Américas) is a United States Department of Defense educational and training facility at Fort Benning near Columbus, Georgia in the United States. Established by the US government for teaching law enforcement and military techniques to US allies in the rest of the Americas, it has been criticized for training Latin American dictators and their militaries in various techniques to quell dissidence in their countries. In 1946, in the early days of the Cold War, the Latin American Training Center -- US Ground Forces was established in the Atlantic sector of the Panama Canal Zone, in the US army base of Fort Amador. During 1949 it was expanded and became the US Army Caribbean Training Center, seated into a former hospital building on the grounds of Fort Gulick (now housing the Melia Hotel). It was once again expanded and renamed the US Army School of the Americas in 1963. It relocated to Fort Benning in 1984, following the signing of the Panama Canal Treaty. More than 61000 military personnel attended these United States Army schools. According to WHINSEC's web page, "the School of the Americas taught military education courses as they were taught in US Armed Forces institutions—the School translated the courses, lessons plans and all, into Spanish.
